Keep three copies of your book in two different kinds of place, with one away from home. In practice that means your writing app's cloud copy, an export to a cloud drive, and an occasional copy on a USB drive. Export a full copy before any big edit.

Why one copy isn't enough
Apps can have outages, accounts can get locked, and a bad edit can overwrite good work. Each copy protects against a different problem: the cloud protects against a lost laptop, and an export protects against a problem with the app itself.

Name copies by date
Name each export with the date first, such as "2026-11-08 Tower Cycle draft 2". Files then sort in order and you can always find the version from before a change.
Export in an open format
Keep at least one copy in a format any computer can open, such as a Word file, PDF or plain text. If you ever leave an app, those files come with you.
