AxiomStory publishes this reference. We make AxiomStory, a manuscript studio, so we have a stake in the answer. We say that on every page, and we name the cases where another tool is the better choice.

What we look at

• Long books. Does the tool stay fast and easy to find your way around at 100,000 words?
• Story memory. Can it keep track of characters, places and rules, or do you keep that in your head?
• Catching mistakes. Does it help you spot contradictions, like a character who dies in chapter 4 and talks in chapter 12?
• Price. What it costs for a year, and whether there is a free way to start.
• Your writing stays yours. Whether the tool writes for you, helps you, or stays out of the way.

How facts are checked

Prices and features come from each tool's official site and are dated on every page. When something changes, we update the page and its date.
